Yes. When a debt is sold (purchased by another party) or assigned (transferred to another creditor), your rights in relation to that debt remain the same. A change in who owns the debt does not affect your ability to dispute it, request verification, or raise a hardship concern.
Under Australian law, a debt purchaser or assignee steps into the shoes of the original creditor. They are bound by the same obligations, including the requirement to follow the ACCC and ASIC debt collection guideline, to pause recovery when a genuine dispute is raised, and to respond to a dispute properly.
If you believe the debt is not owed, the amount is wrong, or you have another genuine objection, you dispute it the same way regardless of who is pursuing it — using the Dispute a Debt form or by contacting us directly.
If you are uncertain who currently owns the debt you are being asked to pay, you are entitled to ask. The party contacting you is required to identify themselves and clarify their role.
