Mistaken identity does happen — sometimes a debtor shares a name, address or phone number with someone else, or contact details have been assigned to the wrong person. If you believe the debt on your notice is not yours, do not ignore it.
Raise a dispute using the Dispute a Debt form and explain clearly that you believe you are the wrong person. Include any information that helps us understand the mix-up — for example:
- you have never dealt with the named creditor;
- your name is similar to but not the same as the name on the notice;
- you believe the notice may relate to a former occupant of your address.
We will put the matter to the original creditor and request that they verify the debtor's identity. If the account does belong to someone else, we will correct our records and close the matter against you. Recovery activity is paused while the investigation is under way.
We will respond to you in writing with our findings.
