Do you recover consumer (personal) debts?

For businesses

No. Merion specialises exclusively in commercial debt recovery — that is, debts between businesses (B2B). We do not accept referrals for consumer debts, which are debts owed by individuals acting in a personal capacity.

Why the distinction matters: Commercial and consumer debt collection operate under different legal frameworks. Consumer debt collection is governed by additional protections under the National Credit Code and related legislation, and requires different licencing, processes and approaches. Firms that work in this space need specific capabilities and credentials for that regulatory environment.

Our focus on commercial recovery means we are well-suited to unpaid B2B invoices, trade accounts, professional services fees owed by business clients, and similar accounts. If the debtor is another business — even a sole trader acting in a business capacity — it is likely a commercial debt we can assist with.

If you need to recover a consumer debt:

  • A consumer debt recovery firm that holds the appropriate Australian Credit Licence is the right option.
  • For smaller amounts, state-based consumer tribunals (such as VCAT in Victoria or NCAT in NSW) can be a cost-effective route.
  • A solicitor who handles debt recovery can also advise on your options.

If you are not sure whether your debt is commercial or consumer, contact us and we will give you an honest assessment.
