What evidence do I need to dispute a debt?

Disputes & complaints

You do not need a perfect paper file to raise a dispute — a clear, honest explanation of your position is a good starting point. But supporting documents always help, because they let us check your account with the original creditor quickly and thoroughly.

Depending on the nature of your dispute, useful evidence might include:

  • Proof of payment — bank statements, payment receipts, transaction references, or remittance advices that show you paid the amount.
  • Communications — emails, letters or messages between you and the original creditor that address the debt, an agreed variation, or a resolution.
  • The contract or invoice — if the amount claimed differs from what was agreed or invoiced, a copy of the original document helps.
  • Proof of identity mismatch — if you believe the debt is not yours at all, anything that shows you are a different person or entity to the named debtor.

Upload or attach documents when you complete the Dispute a Debt form. If you do not have all of them, submit the dispute with what you have — we can ask for more if needed.
