How do I formally dispute this debt?

Disputes & complaints

Formally disputing a debt is a straightforward process. Here is how to do it correctly so your dispute is treated as a genuine objection and recovery is paused while it is reviewed.

  1. Identify the basis of your dispute. Be specific: is the debt not yours? Has it already been paid? Is the amount wrong? Are you the wrong person entirely? A clear, focused dispute is processed faster than a general objection.
  2. Gather supporting documents. You do not need a complete file to start, but any documents that support your position will speed up the review — bank statements showing payment, relevant emails, the original invoice, or anything else that addresses your objection directly.
  3. Submit the dispute. Use the Dispute a Debt form. You will be asked for your reference number, your contact details, a description of the dispute, and the opportunity to upload supporting documents. Submit the form even if you do not have all your documents ready — you can follow up with more information later.
  4. Wait for acknowledgement. We will acknowledge receipt of your dispute and confirm that recovery activity has been paused while the matter is under review.
  5. Outcome in writing. Once we have reviewed the dispute with the original creditor, we will respond to you in writing with what we found and what it means for your account.

You can also submit a dispute by email or phone, but the online form creates a clear written record — which is useful for both of us. If you are unsure what category your objection falls into, see the other articles under Disputes & complaints for more guidance.
