Setting up a direct debit for your payment arrangement is a great way to ensure payments happen on time without needing to manually make each one. Once it is set up, there are a few things to confirm and monitor.
Confirm the following:
- The first payment date. Check when the first deduction will occur — it may be immediately or at the start of the next cycle, depending on when the direct debit was established. We will confirm this with you when the direct debit is set up.
- The account details. Make sure the bank account you have authorised is correct and has sufficient funds before each scheduled payment date.
- The payment amount and frequency. Confirm these match what you agreed so there are no surprises.
What to watch for ongoing:
- Ensure there are sufficient funds in the account before each debit date. A failed direct debit is treated as a missed payment and your bank may also charge a dishonour fee.
- If you change banks or close the account the direct debit is drawn from, contact us immediately so we can update the authority before a payment fails.
- If a payment fails for any reason, contact us as soon as you are aware — see the article on what happens if a direct debit fails.
Otherwise, once set up and running correctly, a direct debit arrangement runs automatically. You will receive confirmation once each payment has been received and applied to your account.
