What happens if my direct debit fails?

Payments & arrangements

If a direct debit payment under your arrangement fails to process — because of insufficient funds, a closed account, or another bank-side issue — it is important to act quickly.

What to do immediately:

  • Contact us as soon as you are aware of the failure. The sooner you get in touch, the more easily it can be rescheduled without affecting your arrangement.
  • Check with your bank to understand why the payment failed and whether it is a one-off issue or something that needs to be resolved.
  • Have your reference number ready so we can locate your account quickly.

What may happen:

  • Your bank may charge a dishonour fee for the failed payment — this is between you and your financial institution, not a charge applied by Merion.
  • If the failed payment is not rescheduled promptly, the arrangement may fall into default. A single missed payment, responded to quickly, is almost always manageable — it is missed payments left unaddressed that cause difficulty.

If your circumstances have changed and the current arrangement is no longer sustainable, let us know. We would rather adjust the plan than have it fail repeatedly. See the article on changing a payment arrangement for more.
