Why you have been contacted

Merion is an Australian commercial debt recovery firm. A business you have dealt with — the original creditor — has asked us to help resolve an amount they record as outstanding. Being contacted is a routine commercial step, not a legal action in itself.

Our role is to make resolving the account as clear and straightforward as possible. We work within the standards set by the ACCC and ASIC debt collection guideline, so contact is professional, factual and free of pressure tactics.

The stages, in order

Most matters follow the same path. Knowing the stages helps you see where you are and what to do next.

  1. First contact. You receive a letter, email or call identifying the original creditor, the amount claimed and a unique reference number.
  2. Your response. You can pay, propose a payment plan, ask a question or dispute the amount. Even a short reply keeps options open.
  3. Working it out. We confirm details, answer questions and agree a way forward that suits your circumstances.
  4. Resolution. The account is settled in full, paid under an arrangement, or closed because a dispute is upheld.
  5. Confirmation. We confirm the outcome in writing so you have a clear record.

What you can do at any stage

You are never locked out of acting. You can ask for information, request more time, propose a plan, or raise a concern at any point. Engaging early almost always leads to a better result than waiting.

If you would like to talk through your situation, you can contact us at any time, or browse the rest of the Help Centre for the topic you need.

Good to know

  • Recovery follows clear stages — contact, response, resolution, confirmation
  • Being contacted is routine and is not the same as legal action
  • Acting early keeps the most options open to you

FAQ

Does being contacted mean I am being taken to court?

No. First contact is a request to resolve the account. Court is a later step that early engagement usually avoids entirely.

How long does the whole process take?

It depends on how the account is resolved. Paying in full closes a matter immediately; a payment plan runs for its agreed term.

What if I cannot pay the full amount?

You can propose a payment arrangement to pay over time. Tell us what you can afford and we review every reasonable proposal fairly.

Still not sure? Our team is happy to talk it through.
