If your main source of income is Centrelink, a pension, or another government benefit, that is a relevant factor in how we approach your account. We take income levels seriously, and we will not propose an arrangement that is not sustainable given what you are receiving.
People living on government payments are often in a tight financial position, and a small regular payment — even a modest one — may be the most that is genuinely manageable. That is a legitimate arrangement, and we would rather have a small sustainable payment than an unrealistic one that fails.
When you contact us or complete a Request a Payment Arrangement, let us know that you are on Centrelink or a pension and what your weekly or fortnightly income is. We will work with that information.
Free financial counselling is also available. The National Debt Helpline (1800 007 007) can help you work out what is affordable and, if needed, negotiate on your behalf.
