The National Debt Helpline is a free, independent telephone and online service that provides financial counselling to people in Australia experiencing financial difficulty. It is staffed by qualified, professional financial counsellors — not salespeople, not debt collectors, and not affiliated with any creditor.
What the National Debt Helpline offers:
- Free, confidential advice about your financial situation and options.
- Help understanding your rights when dealing with debt collectors.
- Practical assistance in preparing a budget or a proposal to creditors.
- Support negotiating with creditors, including acting on your behalf with your consent.
- Referrals to free legal help if your situation has legal dimensions.
How to reach them:
- Phone: 1800 007 007 — free call, Monday to Friday, 9:30 am to 4:30 pm AEST (hours may vary by state).
- Online chat: available at ndh.org.au for those who prefer not to call.
There is no cost, no judgment, and nothing you say affects your account with Merion. We actively encourage people dealing with financial difficulty to speak with the National Debt Helpline — and we are happy to work with a counsellor acting on your behalf if you choose to engage one.
