What a breakdown shows

A payment breakdown sets out how a balance is made up. It helps you see the original amount, what you have paid, and anything that has been added, so the figure is clear rather than a single total.

This is general information, not legal advice. If the breakdown raises concerns, the links below can help.

What to request

Ask for a breakdown that includes:

  • The original amount owed
  • Each payment received and its date
  • Any fees, charges or interest added, with an explanation
  • The current balance and how it was calculated

Step-by-step

  1. Write to the collector with your name and reference number.
  2. Ask for an itemised breakdown of the balance, listing the items above.
  3. Request a written response and a reasonable time to review it.
  4. When it arrives, read it carefully and compare it with your records.
  5. Ask for an explanation of anything that is unclear.
  6. Keep a dated copy of the breakdown.

If the figures look wrong once you have them, see how to respond if the amount is wrong.

If you still have questions

If the breakdown does not answer your questions, ask for more detail in writing. You can also reach us through our contact page to talk it through.

FAQ

What should a payment breakdown include?

The original amount, each payment and its date, any fees or interest added with an explanation, and how the current balance was reached.

Why is interest or a fee on my balance?

Some agreements allow charges or interest to be added. Ask for these to be explained in the breakdown so you can understand how the balance was calculated.

What if the breakdown does not add up?

Point out the discrepancy in writing and ask for it to be checked. If you believe the total is wrong, you can query or dispute the amount.
