Before you start
Referring a debt to Merion is designed to be quick. Before you begin, gather the basics so you can complete the form in one sitting. You will generally need the debtor's full legal or business name, a contact address, the amount owed, and the date the debt fell due. Having a copy of the original invoice and any reminders you have already sent makes the whole process smoother.
Merion works on a commission-only basis for commercial debt recovery in Australia. There is no upfront fee and, under our no recovery, no fee approach, you only pay a commission once money is actually recovered.
The referral steps
- Open the online referral form at merion.com.au/refer-a-debt.
- Enter your business details so we know who is referring the debt and where to send updates.
- Add the debtor's name, trading name, address and best contact details.
- Enter the principal amount owed and the date payment was due.
- Attach the invoice and any reminder letters or emails you have already sent.
- Add a short note about any part-payments, disputes or promises to pay.
- Review the summary, then submit the referral.
Once submitted, you will receive an acknowledgement and a reference for the matter.
What happens next
After you submit, a recovery officer reviews the file and confirms the details with you if anything is unclear. We then make first contact with the debtor on your behalf, usually within a few business days. You can keep your own records tidy by noting the matter reference we provide.
If you are not sure a debt is worth referring yet, you can request a free debt appraisal first and we will give you a plain-English view of your options.
Good to know
- Referring a debt takes only a few minutes online and costs nothing upfront
