My BPAY payment won't go through

BPAY isn't accepting your payment. It's nearly always down to the Biller Code or reference number, and both are quick to double-check.

This guide helps with

  • Understand how BPAY uses the Biller Code and reference
  • Check both numbers are entered correctly
  • Rule out daily limits and funds
  • Know what to do if it still won't work

What's happening

A BPAY payment needs two numbers: a Biller Code that identifies Merion, and a reference number that identifies your account. If either is wrong, your bank will usually refuse the payment or warn you the details don't match. Less often, a payment is blocked by your bank's daily transfer limit or insufficient funds.

Check the numbers

Take the details straight from your Merion letter or notice, not from memory:

  • Enter the Biller Code exactly as printed.
  • Enter the BPAY reference exactly, with no spaces or extra digits.
  • Double-check you haven't transposed any numbers.

If your bank says the reference is invalid, see our guide on a rejected payment reference.

Rule out limits and funds

If the numbers are correct but the payment still won't complete:

  • Check you have enough available funds.
  • Check the amount is within your daily payment limit — you can usually raise this temporarily in your banking app.
  • Try again once any limit is adjusted.

If it still won't work

If BPAY continues to fail, you can pay another way — by card on our Pay your balance page, or by bank transfer. If you'd like us to confirm the correct BPAY details for your account, contact us through the contact page.

Good to know

  • BPAY needs both the Biller Code and your reference number to be exactly right.
  • Copy the numbers from your letter rather than typing them from memory.
  • A daily transfer limit or low funds can also block a BPAY payment.
  • If BPAY won't work, card or bank transfer are reliable alternatives.

FAQ

Where do I find the BPAY Biller Code and reference?

Both are printed on your Merion letter or notice, usually in the payment options section. Enter them exactly as shown.

My bank says the reference is invalid — what now?

Check for transposed or missing digits and re-enter it. If it still won't accept, contact us to confirm the correct BPAY reference for your account.

Can I pay another way if BPAY won't work?

Yes. You can pay by card on our Pay your balance page or by bank transfer. Both apply the payment to your account just the same.
