You're not alone

Financial hardship simply means you genuinely want to pay what you owe, but right now you cannot manage the payments without going without essentials like rent, food or power. It can be caused by losing work, illness, a relationship breakdown, reduced hours or a sudden expense — and it is far more common than most people realise.

Being in hardship is not a failing, and asking for support is not an admission of defeat. It is a recognised, respectful way to agree on a manageable path while things are difficult. Your request will always be handled in confidence.

What you can do

Hardship support can take several shapes, and we will look for the one that genuinely fits your situation.

  • Smaller payments over a longer time, set to your real budget.
  • A temporary pause while you get back on your feet.
  • More time before payments need to start.
  • Other arrangements suited to your circumstances.

Step by step

  1. Have your account or reference number ready.
  2. Jot down a short, honest picture of your income and essential costs.
  3. Contact us through the contact form or reply to your letter, and say clearly that you are experiencing financial hardship.
  4. Tell us what changed and what you could realistically afford, or ask us to suggest options.
  5. Keep a copy of your request and note the date.

FAQ

How do I know if I'm in hardship?

If paying the full amount would leave you short on essentials, you likely qualify to ask for hardship support. You do not need a formal label — just reach out and we will help.

Do I have to prove every dollar of my situation?

No. An honest summary of your income and essential costs is usually enough to start. We only ask for more if we genuinely need it.

Will asking for hardship support cost me anything?

No. Asking us is free, and independent help through the National Debt Helpline (1800 007 007) is free too. You should never pay for that service.
