You're not alone

Financial counsellors are trained professionals who help people understand and deal with money troubles — and their help is free, confidential and completely independent. They are not selling anything and they will never judge you. Their job is simply to be on your side.

Reaching out to one is one of the most useful things you can do if money feels overwhelming. You do not need things to be at crisis point to call; they help people at every stage.

What you can do

A financial counsellor can do far more than just listen.

  • Look at your whole financial picture and explain your options clearly.
  • Help you build a budget and work out what you can afford.
  • Talk to creditors, including us, on your behalf.
  • Point you to other support and entitlements you may not know about.

Step by step

  1. Call the free National Debt Helpline on 1800 007 007 (weekdays).
  2. Explain your situation — there is no need to prepare anything fancy.
  3. Have any account or reference numbers nearby if you can, but it is fine if you cannot.
  4. Ask them to help you plan, and whether they can speak with us for you.
  5. Follow up with us on anything you agree, and keep your notes.

No. Financial counsellors are there to support you, not to judge. Their whole purpose is to help you find a way forward.

Can a counsellor deal with Merion for me?

Yes. With your okay, a financial counsellor can speak with us on your behalf and help arrange something manageable.
