What's happening

If a direct debit didn't come out, it's commonly one of these: the due date fell on a weekend or public holiday and will process the next business day; there weren't enough funds on the day; the bank or card details on file have changed; or the direct debit authority was cancelled at your bank without the plan being updated.

A direct debit that didn't process doesn't undo your plan — it just needs catching up.

Check the basics

Work through these:

  • Confirm the scheduled date and whether it fell on a non-business day.
  • Check there were enough funds in the account that day.
  • Make sure you haven't cancelled the direct debit through your bank.
  • Check whether the account or card the debit comes from has changed.

Catch up the payment

To bring the plan up to date, you can:

  • Make a one-off payment for the missed amount on our Pay your balance page.
  • Or contact us to reschedule the debit or add it to the next one.

If your bank details have changed, let us know so the next debit succeeds.

If money is tight

If the direct debit didn't come out because the amount is hard to manage, please get in touch through the contact page rather than letting it slide. We can look at adjusting the amount or the timing. Free budgeting help is also available from the National Debt Helpline on 1800 007 007.

Good to know

  • A direct debit on a weekend or holiday is simply processed the next business day.
  • Insufficient funds or changed bank details are the usual reasons a debit fails.
  • A missed debit doesn't cancel your plan — catch it up or reschedule.
  • If the amount is hard to manage, ask us to adjust it before it lapses.

FAQ

My direct debit date was a Saturday — is that why?

Quite likely. Direct debits scheduled on a weekend or public holiday are usually processed on the next business day.

Will a missed direct debit cancel my arrangement?

No. One missed debit doesn't cancel the arrangement. Make a one-off payment or contact us to reschedule and it continues.

I changed banks — what should I do?

Let us know your new details so the next direct debit comes from the right account. We can update the plan for you.
